What Is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a trademarked training and competition system that combines functional movements, high intensity and constant variety. Its goal is broad fitness that carries over into everyday life, including endurance, strength, mobility, speed and coordination.
History and Development
- Developed by Greg Glassman in the 1990s; CrossFit, Inc. was established around 2000, with the first “box” in Santa Cruz, California.
- From 2005, the affiliate model supported rapid growth to thousands of locations worldwide.
- The CrossFit Games have been the sport’s flagship international competition since 2007.
Training Principles
- Workout of the Day (WOD): varied sessions combining weightlifting, gymnastics, endurance and bodyweight movements.
- Scaling: movements and loads can be adapted to your current ability.
- Community: group sessions, coaching and progress you can track through times, reps and loads.
Competition Pathway: 2026
- For individuals, the route runs through the Open, Quarterfinals and Semifinals to the CrossFit Games.
- Semifinals include in-person and online events; qualification details depend on the division.
- The Games are the multi-day final, with varied tests and the “Fittest on Earth” title at stake.
Reach and Influence
- Thousands of affiliates worldwide, with a major influence on training methods and the fitness industry.
- An ecosystem spanning education, equipment, events and media.
How It Compares
- HYROX: less standardized, with more variety and an element of surprise.
- ATHX: less zone-based, with more emphasis on community and varied workouts.
- iF3: a commercial brand rather than a governing federation.
- GRID: individual and team competitions testing all-round fitness rather than sprint races between teams of specialists.
